What is Clay Handbuilding?

Walk in any time to experience the joy of creating your own clay masterpiece at Make Expression.

Using soft, moldable clay, you can shape, pinch, roll, carve, and design your own unique pottery or sculpture made 100 percent by you.

No experience required! Our friendly Make Expression instructors will guide you with step by step help, fun techniques, texture tools, and creative inspiration. Whether you're making a bowl, figurine, vase, or something totally original, handbuilding is the perfect way to relax, get messy, and create memories.

...so there is no danger for little ones at Make Expression when painting pottery.

Once you’re done, we will clear glaze your piece and fire it for you in our large Kilns. Clay pieces typically take a 2 weeks to get back to you, so be sure to allow plenty of time if you’re making a gift for someone.

We encourage you to take all the time you need to create your special piece because it is all about creating that special memory. No worries, we actually encourage it. We don't have studio fees, time limits or reservations to worry about.

How Does Clay Handbuilding Work?

Select from many fun ideas or create something completely original.
Our instructors teach simple handbuilding methods such as

• Coil
• Slab
• Texture impressions
• Carving and stamping

Build and Paint

Shape your clay using tools like stamps, carving tools, and cookie cutters, then paint it the same day with more than eighty colors. No extra visit needed.

Fire it up

Once your piece is painted, we let it dry, apply a clear overglaze, and fire it in our kilns at almost 2000 degrees. This gives your creation a beautiful shine and makes it food safe and long lasting.
